The Significance of the Poppy

The red poppy is a powerful symbol of remembrance and hope, inspired by the famous World War I poem, “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. The poem describes the red poppies that grew on the battlefields of Flanders, a poignant reminder of the bloodshed and sacrifices made by soldiers. After the war, the poppy became a symbol of the fallen and a way to honor their memory.

The American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as their official flower in 1921, and since then, Poppy Day has become an annual tradition. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and a way to support those who have served our country.

Community Involvement: A Heartwarming Sight

In our small town, Poppy time is special. The sight of our local auxiliary women, many of whom have personal connections to veterans, standing outside businesses with their hands full of paper poppies is both heartwarming and inspiring. Their dedication and warmth encourage us to take a moment out of our busy lives to remember and honor those who have served.

Local businesses play a crucial role in this tradition. By allowing the sale of poppies on their premises, they show their support for our veterans and help spread awareness about the cause. The presence of poppies inside shops ensures that everyone has the opportunity to contribute, even if they miss the chance to meet the wonderful ladies outside.
